less than an hour agoThen Chloe, 17, spent five hours sitting on a roof surrounded by water as unfathomable flooding ripped through Whitesburg, Kentucky, Thursday.Chloe was desperately trying to save both their lives from floodwaters that killed at least 37 people in Eastern Kentucky that day.

Water had already risen over the deck and up to the door, which is on the opposite side of the home from the nearby river. Chloe was completely surrounded by water. She tried to call 911 several times, as did her grandparents, but emergency services were overwhelmed. Back inside her flooded home again, Chloe grabbed a sofa cushion and put the bin holding Sandy on top of it.
