Playoff-bound but still locked in a tight three-team battle for the Pacific Division title, the Kings are dealing with injury issues at a bad time with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl coming to t…
A mere two days after they clinched a playoff berth, the Kings will already be in a high-stakes game when they welcome the Edmonton Oilers to Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday night in the final regular-season meeting between two of the three contenders for the Pacific Division title.
A potential four-point showdown with a rival will spin them directly into a visit to Vegas. That will leave little time to savor the asterisk beside “Los Angeles Kings” in the standings that solidified their second straight trip to the postseason in this, the sixth 100-point campaign in franchise history.
For a considerable stretch of the season, the Kings were plagued by lapses that undermined their broader, stronger game, as well as a suspect penalty kill and substandard goaltending. Adjustments both subtle, such as Trent Yawney’s ongoing work developing defenders, and drastic, like General Manager Rob Blake’s swapping out not one but two goaltenders during the season, have afforded the Kings greater consistency.
“Early on, we were giving up too many goals, it wasn’t a secret,” Kopitar said. “We hunkered down on that. Since the All-Star break, we’ve come back and really made the commitment to getting that number down.”
