Knozone Action Days declared for June 27-28 in Central Indiana
Knozone Action Days are declared when ozone or fine particulate matter levels rise above certain thresholds. Often this is caused by weather patterns and creates unhealthy ground-level amounts of ozone, which is the primary cause of smog in cities. Smog is formed when harmful emissions from sources like cars and lawnmowers react with heat and sunlight.
Air pollutants — like those seen during Knozone Action Days — can cause increased hospitalizations for asthma, bronchitis, heart attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , and is sometimes deadly, according to the American Public Health Association. Just shy of 11% of Indianapolis residents live with asthma, and 8.6% of Indianapolis residents live with COPD; both these figures are higher than the national average.
