Russian authorities face pressure after detention of investigative reporter Ivan Golunov, with both liberal and pro-Kremlin figures calling for his immediate release
Russian investigative journalist Ivan Golunov, charged with attempted drug-dealing, sits inside a defendants' cage during a hearing at a court in Moscow on June 8, 2019.
President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, defended the law-enforcement system in general, saying people make mistakes in separate cases. Golunov, who works for the independent website Meduza, was beaten and kept in custody for 12 hours without a lawyer after he was stopped by police in Moscow on Thursday, according to his lawyer.
