Eternals star and standup comedian Kumail Nanjiani defends legendary directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino despite MCU criticisms.
Standup comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani recently defended legendary directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino despite their criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nanjiani starred in the MCU's Eternals as hero-turned-Bollywood star, Kingo. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, the superhero ensemble film was met with mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, garnering the lowest Rotten Tomato score of any MCU film in the franchise's history.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Esquire, Nanjiani defended Scorsese and Tarantino despite their well-publicized critiques of superhero films. Following the release of Avengers: Endgame, Scorsese compared MCU films to theme park rides and claimed they were not cinema. Tarantino also publicly criticized the movies and how they cornered the theatrical market.
“I obviously love the movies Tarantino makes or Scorsese makes, and I may disagree with Scorsese’s opinion on superhero movies, but I mean, who else has earned the right to have an opinion? If Scorsese hasn’t earned the right to have an opinion on movies, then none of us should have an opinion on movies. It’s so strange that people get upset about it.”Is the MCU Hurting the Movie Industry? Scorsese and Tarantino's comments focused on different ways the MCU impacts cinema.
Both directors make valid points still prominently discussed by filmmakers, actors, critics, and fans worldwide. However, many came in defense of the MCU and the superhero genre. Black Panther star, Lupita Nyong'o, defended the MCU, calling it "culturally prosperous" to have options, with her co-star Danai Gurira echoing the sentiment and singling out the complex stories within their films.
However, Tarantino's comments may ring true to cinema fans as MCU films consume a theater's real estate during the first weeks of the movie's theatrical run. However, the director may be ignoring the dramatic shift in the cinematic landscape within the last 15 years. Netflix and other streaming services have changed the market for films and television. Due to the rising costs of tickets, among other factors, film production companies heavily weigh the need for a cinematic release.
