The 49ers have three Round 5 picks. With Robbie Gould saying he will not re-sign in San Francisco — and with the franchise tag being too expensive to use on him — the Niners should spend one of those Round 5 picks on the best kicker in this draft by a longshot, Michigan’s Moody.
Not only can Moody make field goals inside the 50 look routine, but he can also push it out past 50 and is outstanding on kickoffs. His Shrine Bowl performance was enough to make him a possible Day 2 pick, but I ultimately think he falls to the fifth.Moody is used to that from his days at Michigan.But it’s better to be too early than too late when you have a clear need.It doesn’t matter if Mike McGlinchey stays or goes, Daniels needs to be on the Niners’ radar.
Daniels’ athleticism is clear on tape and was validated at the combine, as he ran a sub-5-second 40-yard dash, with strong 3-cone and 20-yard shuffle scores.But strength can be developed. Technique can be refined. Athleticism? That’s something entirely different. Pair that with Daniels’ high-energy motor, toughness , and a deep familiarity with the outside zone scheme and you have a player the 49ers can make another Day 3 star.
