The Los Angeles Public Library and the Changing Tones Advisory Committee threw a jubilee celebration for Juneteenth at the Central Library on Thursday.
The committee was formed in 2019 to make sure representation of African Americans occurs in libraries, collections, the workforce and more.
Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Thursday's jubilee included speakers, workshops and live entertainment. "Juneteenth, for us now, is a celebration. It's about family. It's about community. It's about upliftment, and realizing what we have overcome thus far in this country," said Jené Brown, head of the Changing Tones Advisory Committee.
Community members and visitors across Southern California are learning more about Juneteenth and its importance to the African American community."He's learning a little bit. We made a necklace, and I hope that with the years he gets to understand his history, and understand the importance of culture, and knowing the facts and importance of Juneteenth," said Sara Hutchins.Many in attendance said it was important and special to see the representation in the city.
"I think it was really good to celebrate being Black and celebrate my culture, and just because a lot of times I go to different cultural events to celebrate other cultures, and it's not a lot of opportunities where I can see myself represented. But todays like the whole day, the whole library, and that was really, really nice." said Natalie Williams Awodeha.
