Imelda Padilla will face off against Marisa Alcaraz in June 27 election to replace former Councilmember Nury Martinez.

, a top aide to current Councilmember Curren Price, face each other in the June 27 runoff election. The county registrar’s office has begun sending out vote-by-mail ballots to registered voters in District 6.

“Being somebody that was picked on, I’ve always kind of been the defender of the underdog,” she said. “I’ve always had a critical eye for justice.”Padilla credited her parents for instilling strong work ethics in her and the desire to give back to her community. Her father, a gardener, left for work at 5 a.m. and did not return until 5 p.m., while her mother, a factory worker, was away from home 3 p.m. to midnight.

Padilla believes the city should provide more resources to address a lack of activities for young people, which would help keep them out of trouble. She went on to become an organizer for the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, working on a campaign toBetween those two jobs, in 2013, Padilla worked as a field deputy for then-Councilmember Martinez for about 18 months.

Beyond her day jobs, Padilla served on the Sun Valley Area Neighborhood Council for several years. As a member of its Land Use Committee, she advocated for projects ranging from tree-plantings to cleaning up alleyways. Padilla notes that she’s worked for nonprofit organizations, in government and in the private sector, and has an understanding of how those different sectors work.
