L.A. City Councilmember Curren Price, facing embezzlement, perjury and conflict of interest charges, was absent today.
A motion by Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson was also filed, calling on the city attorney to report to the council on eligibility requirements for any potential appointee to replace Price, and for a staff report on options for selecting a voting representative for Price’s Council District 9 that would include input from residents of the district.Price — who has been a powerhouse on the City Council — did not attend Wednesday’s council meeting.
The criminal complaint the District Attorney’s office filed alleges that Price effectively embezzled money between 2013 and 2017 by getting the city to cover about $33,800 in medical premiums for his partner,, even though he was still married to Lynn Suzette Price.
“While I navigate through the judicial system to defend my name against unwarranted charges filed against me, the last thing I want to do is be a distraction to the people’s Business,” Price wrote. Ahead of Wednesday’s council meeting, Krekorian announced at a press conference that he is appointing San Fernando Valley-based Councilmember Bob Blumenfield as the assistant pro tempore and that he intends to nominate South L.A.-based Harris-Dawson as the permanent president pro tempore. The full council must agree to elect Harris-Dawson to that position. A vote could take place as soon as Friday, according to Krekorian’s office.
