Opinion: Labor Center expansion within the University of California is for the public good

for big corporations who refuse to pay their workers a living wage, and are fighting a dynamic national movement led by restaurant and service workers who are demanding justice and dignity on the job.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the economic and racial disparities within the state of California have gotten worse. Despite California’s vast economic power–greater than that of most nations – we see growing homelessness, wage inequality, and the proliferation of low-wage jobs, while at the top end of the economic spectrum, corporate profits have exploded.

At the UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC Merced Labor Centers, we are proud that long before the onset of the pandemic, we’ve spearheaded trustworthy research focused precisely on low-wage workers and workers of color because these workers have always been an essential part of California’s economy. Labor Studies classes that provide students with an opportunity to explore careers with unions and community organizations, in policy, government, education, research, and business;Health and Safety research and policy initiatives, especially during the pandemic, with a particular focus on low-wage workers in the agricultural sector and in the cities;
