At first a source of embarrassment, Mei beings to lean in to her animal alter ego and exploit the form for popularity and fortune. The setup has all sorts of metaphorical potential — especially related to adolescence and cultural heritage — but the film ignores any heavy stuff in favor of cheap laughs and dull subplots that don't go anywhere.
Sandra Oh plays Ming, Mei's gruff, demanding mother, Wai Ching Ho voices her more measured and understanding grandmother, and Ava Morse and Hyien Park round out the main cast as Mei's friends, Miriam and Abby.
