As people around the world were mesmerized by the tragic fate of the Titan submersible last week, Lake Forest's David Waud observed from a unique position.

“I just feel so bad for the men who were on it,” Waud said. “At least it happened in a split-second, and they weren’t floating around for 96 hours in pitch-dark and getting colder and colder.”FILE - This photo provided by OceanGate Expeditions shows a submersible vessel named Titan used to visit the wreckage site of the Titanic.
“I never thought I was going to get down to the Titanic until I heard about OceanGate in 2018,” he said. David Waud recalled going to Newfoundland leading into the eight-day trip going deep into the ocean, highlighted by a two-hour glimpse of the stern of the Titanic. Waud said he was able to film the Titanic’s stern, but not the bow as the crew was not able to get close enough amid the difficult current.
