SACRAMENTO — Every time Anthony Davis can’t take the court, he leaves a hole.On Wednesday night, the Sacramento Kings exposed that vacuum in the paint – the territory Davis has patrolled with intimidating force when healthy – and all the ways it can now be exploited. They backed the Lakers down in the post, they skied through the air for lobs out of the pick-and-roll, and in a particularly ugly third quarter, they back-cut their visitors into oblivion.
It’s the kind of challenge this team will face nightly for the still undetermined stretch they’re about to play without Davis, who covered up a lot of weaknesses but none more than at the defensive end. With a guard-heavy roster that was also missing Russell Westbrook and Austin Reaves, the margins were already razor-thin. The Kings blew the doors off with clever adjustments in the middle quarters.
