Director Deborah Gilmour Smyth said the 1981 musical teaches important lessons of inclusiveness and tolerance
After 20 years, Lamb’s Players Theatre is bringing back an old favorite, a musical it has staged three times before dating back to the ‘80s.
Smyth considers “Cotton Patch Gospel” an important show now, too, “because of all the stuff that’s going on and all the different things people are feeling. We’ve had to re-inform ourselves as to what it means to be both inclusive and tolerant and to be open and listen.” The new production’s co-stars are Bryan Barbarin, Michael Louis Cusimano and Ernest Sauceda, all of them familiar to Lamb’s audiences.
“The last 10 years or so the resurgence of Americana music has been huge,” said Smyth, pointing out that it’s ideal for the tenor of this show. “What it does is make it really present and easy; there’s nothing pretentiously sacred about it. It lets the guys just sing their guts out.”
