A large pink diamond, believed to be the largest pink diamond found in 300 years, was discovered at a mine in Angola on Wednesday.
The 170-carat diamond, named the"Lulo Rose" was discovered in a river bed by the Lulo alluvial diamond mine, owned by the Lucapa Diamond Company. Pink diamonds are considered rare, according to Lucapa Diamond Company Managing Director Stephen Wetherall.“Only one in 10,000 diamonds is colored pink. So you're certainly looking at a very rare article when you find a very large pink diamond,” Wetherall told the Associated Press.
The rarity of the size and color of the diamond makes the stone valuable, but it's unclear how much it would be sold for. The company is searching for the main source of the diamonds, Wetherall said. The company is responsible for discovering the two largest diamonds in the country, including a clear diamond that's over 400 carats. The pink gem is the fifth largest diamond discovered by the company, which has uncovered 27 stones that are over 100 carats. Although 170 carats is sizable for a pink diamond, some clear diamonds are over 1,000 carats.
The record for the largest diamond ever found is the Cullinan Diamond, which was found in South Africa in 1905. The diamond stands at 3,106 carats and is in the British Sovereign's Scepter.
