Obituary: As CEO of Kohl’s, Larry Montgomery used helicopters to study traffic patterns and decide where to put stores
As a young man, Larry Montgomery described his ambition as getting out of Michigan. He achieved that goal with a retailing career that spanned the nation.
When, at age 50, he became chief executive of Kohl’s Corp. in February 1999, the department-store chain had 213 stores in 22 states, with annual sales of about $3.7 billion. When he stepped down as chairman in 2009, annual sales exceeded $16.4 billion, and the store count had more than quadrupled to over 1,000 stores in 49 states.
