Larry Stone’s 27-year run as assessor faces stiff test in primary
With his colorful bow ties and suspenders, Larry Stone has for almost 30 years been the face of the Santa Clara County Assessor’s Office — an agency that keeps a low profile yet has the responsibility to determine the taxable value of all private and public property in the county.
According to the latest campaign contribution filings, Kremen raised $71,273 last year to Stone’s $55,025. Both have invested heavily in their own campaigns, with Stone putting up $270,000 of his own money and Kremen $170,000.“I expect to win,” Stone said. “I’m not going to lose this one.” While the assessor’s job isn’t as visible as a sheriff or district attorney, the race between Kremen and Stone has been anything but dull.
In addition, Kremen has received money from water district employees, as well as $1,000 from Palo Alto Councilmember Alison Cormack and $1,000 from Monte Sereno Councilmember Elisabeth Lawler. He’s also criticized Stone for being resistant to letting his employees work from home during the pandemic.
