The public will no longer be able to watch Lipizzans use their powerful legs to perform aerial maneuvers, nor will they be able to visit the horses in the stables and stroke their manes.
“This decision did not come lightly,” said Esther Buonanno, program director and granddaughter of the founders. “But our ownership family is moving in different directions.“For 65 years and three generations, promoting and preserving the Lipizzan breed and classical horsemanship has been a passion for our family, those who have worked closely with the horses and community members near and far,” Buonanno said.
Closing the doors to performances and education has saddened patrons, including Diana Mason Bruhn of Woodstock. She learned about Lipizzan horses after reading a book called “Airs Above the Ground” as a young girl. When her three adult daughters were growing up, they joined 4H and took lessons in dressage, Western and English style horse riding. They also attended shows at Tempel Farms.“We learned about training methods, and watched horses perform at different levels,” Bruhn said. “We loved the parade of snow-white mares and their beautiful dark foals. We always enjoyed a visit to the luxurious Tempel Farms, where the matinee performances were always a thrill.
