More than a month after the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo building, authorities identified the remains of the final victim who wasn’t accounted for. “Nothing we can say or do will bring back these 98 angels.”
condo building in Surfside, Fla., authorities said they had identified the remains of the final victim who wasn’t accounted for, bringing the total number of dead to 98.
Estelle Hedaya, 54 years old, lived on the sixth floor of the building and maintained a lifestyle blog where she discussed topics such as fashion, travel and her Jewish faith. Her remains were found on July 20 and later identified, according to the Miami-Dade County Police Department. “Nothing we can say or do will bring back these 98 angels, who left behind grieving families, beloved friends, loved ones across this community and across the world,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “But we have done everything possible to bring closure to the families, and I am especially proud that through these tireless efforts we were able at last to bring closure to all those who reported missing loved ones.
The announcement capped a painstaking effort, much of it done by hand, to identify the remains of all those who died in the tower collapse on June 24. First responders combed through piles of rubble at the site of the building, as well as a secondary evidence-recovery site where debris was taken. “For the past 33 days, they have searched the rubble as if they were searching for one of their own,” Ms. Levine Cava said. “Even now, teams from Miami-Dade Police Department are continuing to sift through millions of pounds of debris, carefully and meticulously searching for remains and for any personal items that will help bring closure to the families.”
