Light snow is expected in northwestern New Jersey, but forecasters are worried that freezing rain could cause a light coating of ice on roads in central and northern counties.

A large winter storm system is expected to bring snow to northern New Jersey and heavy rain to other parts of the state starting Thursday, Dec. 15, and continuing into early Friday, Dec. 16.As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, no formal winter storm watches or winter weather advisories have been issued in New Jersey. However, two nearby counties — Carbon and Monroe in northeastern Pennsylvania — have been placed under a winter storm watch.

Minor coastal flooding may occur during high tide cycles from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon in coastal sections of New Jersey and Delaware, the weather service said.
