In less than two years, the club’s Houston chapter has grown to more than two dozen women. The group meets every other week usually to run or sometimes to walk a 3-mile route in places such as Memorial and River Oaks.
From left, Rosa Garcia, Ellie Minjares, Pattie Peña and Rosa Perez pose for a portrait after their run celebrating International Women’s Day in Willowbrook on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.When Ellie Miranda Minjares started running at her sister-in-law’s urging in 2017, she was inspired by how much the runners she met varied in age.
Rosa Perez, an ambassador for the club, said Latinas Run has become a safe space for many of the women who have joined. Perez said the chapter has come a long way, developing partnerships with local athletic apparel stores to host running events. Lululemon’s Highland Village location will soon begin hosting the chapter’s runs every other week.
Minjares has celebrated her culture by becoming a youth coach for Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that trains elementary-age children in long-distance racing. She didn’t have many role models that looked like her growing up, she said, but coaching gives her a chance to be just that for today’s young runners.Others, such as Latinas Run captain Grace Enriquez, have used the running club as a way to relieve stress.
