The 2022-23 Saskatchewan Youth Poet Laureate is a teacher at Oskayak High School who helps youth connect to themselves and their communities.
A writer of poetry propelled by vulnerability and humour, Lauren Klassen is the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Saskatchewan Youth Poet Laureate.The collective holds monthly open mic nights, as well as workshops and poetry slams. Last year, it introduced a spoken word series called BIPOC Ballads, supported through anWorking on increasing turnout, Klassen reaches out to youth through social media, when they engage with the group’s pages.
“It’s definitely given me more courage to go up in front of crowds and be vulnerable, really. And to play around with it some more, and mainly just be more confident.” “There’s designated people that you can just go and talk to if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and Lauren is usually one of those designated people,” Rogalski says. “She just really provides a safe space for everyone by opening up to them and just being a safe person to talk to.”Article contentKlassen uses her gift for connecting with youth to mentor and encourage them with poetry and in her teaching career.
“Understanding their identities through the anti-oppressive lens gives them something to reflect on in their own lives and hopefully learn more about their identities.”“It’s cool to use my own set of skills with poetry to bring that into their learning experience and to use that to inspire them or use different methods of teaching,” she says.
“We learn music together, but also we laugh about when it goes wrong and we sound bad,” she says with a laugh.Article content
