.LuxuryLaw, the man behind August cover star ArianaGrande's instantly recognizable look, talks her singular style evolution.

ponytails, miniskirts, and thigh-high boots are an integral part of her pop persona and have become their own cultural phenomenon. Grande has been been perfecting her visuals since the release of her debut album, Yours Truly. in 2013 but her style truly came into its own once she began collaborating with image architect Law Roach. The man behind Zendaya’s continued red carpet dominance and Mary J.

The pair began working together in 2016 and from the start Roach knew his role wasn’t to try and change Grande’s public persona; instead he aimed to elevate the styles already in her repertoire. “I always say if you put Ariana behind a screen and you just see her silhouette, as soon as the back light comes up, you know it’s her,” said Roach, who considers Grande’s signatures to be iconic. “She came to me with the ponytail and thigh high boots, with that DNA—I didn’t change a thing.

Staying true to Grande’s DNA meant enlisting some of fashion’s top names and getting their perspective on what a modern pop star should wear. Roach has sought out Donatella Versace and Y/Project’s Glenn Martens to create custom pieces, and has only one caveat in his selection process: the designers he collaborates with have to appreciate Grande’s artistry. “We’ve only worked with people that I knew were fans of her and her music,” he said.

Under Roach’s watch, Grande has worn everything from bondage-inspired Versace onstage during the Sweetener tour to fairy tale–worthy Vera Wang at the 2018 Met Gala. Her recurring silhouettes—short A-line skirt, poufy princess dress, and oversize streetwear with towering heels—may change slightly, but Grande is the rare celebrity uninterested in emulating the past or following runway trends. “The girl is authentic,” said Roach.
