A lawsuit seeks to boot Michigan gubernatorial hopeful Ryan Kelley from the ballot for his alleged role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Kelley, who pleaded not guilty last week to four misdemeanor charges related to the Capitol riot, should be barred from running because he"engaged in insurrection or rebellion" in violation of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, according to the lawsuit filed by a Michigan voter and backed by liberal watchdog group Progress Michigan.“It’s simple, really.
Many of those charges carry up to one year behind bars and fines of about $100,000. He has maintained that"no crime was committed" and that he was merely practicing his First Amendment rights. The lawsuit was filed in the Michigan Court of Appeals. Plaintiff Lee Estes has previously donated to Democrats such as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, the Detroit Free Press reported.
