The New York Yankees announced his death on Twitter Monday.

After leaving the Yankees, Pepitone played for the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs before wrapping up his Major League career with the Atlanta Braves in 1973. He also spent time in Japan playing for the Yakult Adams of the Nippon Professional Baseball league in 1973.Pepitone was a colorful character.

He coached baseball after his playing days were done, then had a big role in professional softball. He was featured in Jim Bouton’s book, “Ball Four,” and he wrote his own book, “Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud,” too.He spent four months in Rikers Island after two misdemeanor drug convictions. He got into a scuffle in 1992 and picked up an assault charge after police said someone called him a “has-been.” He was arrested after police said he crashed his car while driving intoxicated in 1995.

“You always knew when Joe walked into a room — his immense pride in being a Yankee was always on display,” the team wrote on Twitter. “He will be missed by our entire organization, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
