“There was a big fear it would kill the show,” says Allan Arkush of a seminal episode. “But on the other hand, the writing staff…felt it was just too coy to keep it going.”
That night’s installment, “I Am Curious…Maddie,” was, in the parlance of ’80s television, a Very Special Episode. After more than two seasons of foreplay, David Addison and Maddie Hayes were going to stop with the banter and bickering and finally get horizontal. Or, as the show’s ads not so subtly teased, “No more between the lines. Tonight’s between the sheets.” Arkush had a vested interest in this particular episode: He directed it.
To add to the usual production tumult, Shepherd had recently announced that she was pregnant. And Willis had injured himself during a Utah ski excursion. “I Am Curious…Maddie” was an atypical Moonlighting. There was no mystery to solve, no silly chases, little of the show’s signature rapier-like repartee. It was all about Maddie’s choice: David or Sam.
