“I’d like to encourage all Utahns to support them towards reigning in future disaster costs,” writes David in Salt Lake City.

U.S. Rep. John Curtis leads climate scientists and constituents on a hike in Rock Canyon in Provo, Monday, Sept. 26, 2022.Storm, drought supercharged U.S. weather extremes in 2022

″ highlights the cost of weather related disasters compared to the ‘80s, ‘90s, or 2000s. The numbers are sobering: $165 billion for 2022, $1 trillion in the past seven years versus $313 billion for the entire ‘90s decade, to say nothing about the deaths and the future growth of these numbers as our average temperature continues to rise.

This reminds me of what Benjamin Franklin famously said about fires in Philadelphia:"an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” When we weigh the costs to transition to cleaner energy, we could think of it as an investment to reduce the growth of what we spend on weather disasters. Most of us service our cars before the valves burn, and most of us maintain our furnaces so they don’t go out in the middle of winter. There are a lot of good ideas across the political spectrum.— led by Utah’s own John Curtis and having all four of our House representatives as members — has an opportunity to step forward in this new Congress. I’d like to encourage all Utahns to support them towards reigning in future disaster costs.
