Immigrants aren’t taking jobs away from Americans, a reader says, adding it would be wise to view the U.S.-Mexico border as a job-processing center. Some of former President Donald Trump’s defenders have said the Justice Department has selectively singled him out for prosecution. It would be logical that all crimes be punished according to the law regardless of what happened in the past.

Both former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have taken the calculated position that separates themselves from Trump after Jan. 6, 2021. Missing are admissions of their unwavering support and defense of the ex-president during the Russia investigation, denial of climate change and the Ukrainian bribe attempt that resulted in the first impeachment. Now we have presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, if elected, considering pardoning Trump.

During 2020-21, millions of Americans were forced to leave their careers, while others opted to stay safe at home. Now, as we consider rebounding from the great resignation, nearly two-thirds of Americans who became unemployed during that period say they are somewhat or not very actively searching for work.

As immigrants from around the globe, documented or not, cross the border, we must think of the Texas border as a workforce processing center. Americans’ jobs are not being threatened. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are more than 10 million job vacancies and businesses are struggling to find workers.

So, whether buses take immigrants to other cities, Americans aren’t jockeying for those low-wage positions.Daniel Seddiqui, Oregon
