A reader says Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, didn’t really stand up for families during debt ceiling talks.The 88th Legislature’s regular session is over, but roadway safety efforts need to continue. We are still losing thousands of lives each year in Texas to preventable distracted driving crashes.
We need change if we are going to save lives. Part of that change includes stronger legislation regarding distracted driving. Each legislative session, members of the Johnson High School Smart Driving Club walk the halls of the Capitol demanding the adults work together to protect the residents of Texas. Bills filed in the House and the Senate did not receive a hearing despite support from both committees.
Advocates will continue to remind drivers to keep their eyes on the road and not on their phones, but we need a stronger law so officers can enforce safe driving.In Texas, you have to be 21 years old to buy beer, wine, other alcoholic beverages or cigarettes. Yet any 18-year-old can buy an assault rifle and murder — 21 in Uvalde alone.
And still, our Legislature fails to do anything to correct this problem. It is time we vote them all out of office and elect a new group that will represent the will of the people, not the NRA.
