East Bay Times Letters to the Editor for May 28, 2023

The Oakland mayor and City Council have defunded and demoralized the police to such an extent that they are unable to properly do their job. The district attorney has bent over backward to release incarcerated thugs to continue committing street muggings, carjackings, store break-ins and the like.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has tarnished the court’s image and its credibility with his financial shenanigans. His refusal to divulge financial privileges given to him by Texas billionaire Harlan Crow are facts, not rumors. From the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court has been gradually weakening, not strengthening, our democracy.

The Republican senators have been doing everything they can to block the activities of the Senate Judiciary Committee in advancing judicial confirmations. If Sen. Feinstein resigns, they would refuse to let Democrats fill her seat on this committee. Sen. Feinstein’s resignation would only result in jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. We cannot rely upon the statements of senators like Lindsay Graham that they would support the replacement if Feinstein resigned now.
