A yard worker cleared leaves from the street in front of an East Dallas property.Re: “City eyes ban on gas-powered lawn tools — Environmental factors prompt proposed shift for all in 2027 or 2030,” Nov. 28 Metro & Business story.

When our air is this dirty and a simple solution presents itself, we are obligated to take strong action.Re: “Don’t Blow It, Dallas — Plan to ban gas-powered lawn equipment violates rights and is bad local government,” Dec. 4 Editorials. I also don’t like the idea of the footprint of all the rare earth minerals it takes to make the batteries. Especially when it takes us one step closer to dependence on China. Doesn’t the Dallas City Council have more important things to work on, such as crime? The editorial says the City Council included “some data about emissions.” That data means that in one hour, a gas-powered leaf blower emits pollution comparable to driving a 2017 Toyota Camry about 1,100 miles.

Although the environmental damage is modest in comparison to many other polluters, the carbon exhaust from these gas leaf-blowers is 124 times higher than that of a truck or car. The mindless roar of leaf blowers blowing dust from your yard to mine disturbs the peace in a major way. To suggest that this infernal cacophony cannot be regulated is absurd. Can the city not require every leaf blower to have an effective muffler, like cars have? Let’s make Dallas more livable, not less.Anyone backing a ban on leaf blowers should first try to use electric tools instead of gas to accomplish the same level of work.
