Readers criticize Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars; praise the president’s speech given in Warsaw; urge support of a carbon tax; praise the Utah governor for vetoing a transgender sports bill; and discuss Southlake mayor’s recent meme.
President Joe Biden’s speech in Warsaw on Saturday may have been the most important, and arguably best, address of his administration. The audience was more than Poland and Ukraine — it was all nations in the world opposed to autocracy and committed to freedom and democratic principles. It was powerful and forcefully delivered, placing the current war into a larger historical context, showing that “might makes right” and that once again we are called upon to save democracy.
What went wrong? At the same time that Russia went from Mikhail Gorbachev to Vladimir Putin, the Republican party went from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump.Re: “Texas can lead in energy or fall behind — Environmentalists, energy boosters must join forces and ease reliance on oil and gas,” by Colin Leyden, Friday Opinion.
This approach is strongly supported by economists. There’s a bipartisan bill in Congress that does this, HR 2307.
