Three LGBTQ lawmakers discuss their views on several bills in the legislature targeting the LGBTQ community, including banning gender-affirming care for minors and restricting drag shows.

PUBLISHED 3:07 PM CDT Mar. 31, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — A scene is becoming familiar at the Texas Capitol this legislative session: Hundreds of LGBTQ rights advocates rallying against Republican-led bills they say would hurt Texans. This includes proposals targeting transgender athletes in college sports, banning gender-affirming care for minors and restricting drag shows. In the middle of these debates are the nine LGBTQ lawmakers in the legislature. One of them is Rep. Ann Johnson, D-Houston.

“I think it is vitally important for folks to see that I am here as an open, out member, married to my wife Sonya Cuellar,” she said. “They are living a life, just like the rest of us,” said Rep. Johnson. “And I think we’d be better for having understanding, and compassion, and the willingness to accept and learn from their struggles, as opposed to making life worse. And I have no doubt that the conversations that are occurring right now in the Texas House, in the Texas Senate, and in the political world, is making life worse for these individuals, most of them children.

“I don’t think these policies have anything to do with protecting children. I think they’re political,” Rep. Johnson said. “The problem is not inside this chamber. The problem is outside this chamber, and the fact that there are political persuasions and influences at a non-Texan level, that are trying to make the attacks on our community today’s political win in certain primaries.”
