You want to be friendly, but small talk always feels awkward. Learn how to keep the conversation flowing by asking getting-to-know-you questions and learning to follow (not always lead).
I want to be friendly and polite, but sometimes I can’t think of a thing to say. How about you? Do you have the same problem with easy conversation starters? Here are some strategies I try when my mind goes blank:the food, the room, the occasion, the weather. Yes, talking about the weather is a cliché, but it works. Good questions to ask are “How do you know our host?” and “What brings you to this event?” Always keep it on the positive side.
10. Along the same lines, counter-intuitively, don’t try to talk about your favorite topic, because you’ll be tempted to talk too much. This is a strategy that I often fail to follow, but I should follow it. I’ll get preoccupied with a topic and want to talk about it all the time, with everyone I meet, and I have a lot to say.
