Lijnders is an energetic, intelligent, enthusiastic coach who runs Liverpool’s pre-match warm-up drills and much of the hands-on first-team training at Melwood, but the 36-year-old played a key role at the club even before becoming Klopp’s assistant last season. Lijnders’ first job at Liverpool was as coach of the U-16s, but was soon promoted to first-team development coach. In this role he helped carve a pathway from the academy at Kirkby to the senior team at Melwood, and glimpses of this progress can be seen in these summer fixtures.
At Liverpool this became known as the ‘talent group’ or ‘futures group’. Its most successful graduate in recent years is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was a big part of Liverpool’s Champions League success last season. , and it was his quick corner which set up Divock Origi to complete that miraculous comeback against Barcelona at Anfield.
