Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is calling for the person who leaked Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion signaling the reversal of Roe v. Wade to be 'prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.'
The Wyoming Republican’s comments come as justices have seen an uptick in threats of violence after their addresses were published online, with protests taking place outside their homes.
“There is no place in our constitutional republic for violence or efforts to intimidate. Citizens have the right to have their voices heard, but it is wrong for crowds to be protesting outside Supreme Court Justices’ homes,” Cheney said in a statement exclusively obtained by the Washington Examiner.“Whomever leaked the draft opinion has done damage to the institution of the Supreme Court and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” she said.
Justices have been provided with extra security since the leak, fencing has been put up around the Supreme Court building, and the administration has called for protests to remain peaceful. ".@POTUS strongly believes in the Constitutional right to protest. But that should never include violence, threats, or vandalism," White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted Monday morning."Judges perform an incredibly important function in our society, and they must be able to do their jobs without concern for their personal safety."
Republicans have widely criticized the leak, alleging it was an attempt to “bully” judges into changing their positions, while Democrats have taken aim at the GOP for focusing on the leak more than the potential policy change.Cheney, who is in a heated primary battle, having been accused by her opponent and former President Donald Trump of being a Republican in name only, has been vocal in her support of outlawing abortion in most instances, receiving an A-plus rating from the Susan B.
