Longtime Rutgers’ assistant coach announces departure from program
between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Campanile had one more year remaining on his current contract, a two-year deal signed in April of 2022 that was set to expire on February 29, 2024, according to an offer sheet obtained by NJ Advance Media via an open records request. He was scheduled to make $315,000 in the 2023 season, the same salary he made during the 2022 season.
Campanile spent the previous five seasons at Rutgers, working under two head coaching regimes in his time in Piscataway. He was originally hired by former Scarlet Knights coach Chris Ash as a running backs coach ahead of the 2018 season. Campanile served in the role for a season before being switched over to tight ends coach, a change that lasted four games before he was bumped up to a much bigger role.
The group struggled in his six games at the helm, averaging just 12 points per game and getting shut out twice, averaging 229 yards while failing to break the 200-yard mark three times, throwing for 135 yards or less four times and rushing for less than 50 yards four times. The— 135 total yards and zero points against the 10th ranked defense in the Big Ten — was likely the final nail in the coffin of his candidacy for the permanent offensive coordinator job.
