Long before there were shouts of fake news, there was a fake news show. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” launched 25 years ago this month and is celebrating the milestone.
In this combination photo, Craig Kilborn, former host of "The Daily Show," appears at the premiere of "Old School" in Los Angeles on Feb. 13, 2003, from left, Jon Stewart appears during a taping of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" in New York on Nov. 30, 2011 and Trevor Noah appears during a taping of "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" in New York on Sept. 29, 2015.
The co-creators built a show that would go on to win dozens of Emmys, two Peabody Awards and honors from the Writer’s Guild, the NAACP and GLAAD. They established a format that proved sturdy enough to outlast various hosts. Winstead had always been a comedian mining social and political humor, but it took the way CNN covered the first Gulf War that led her to “The Daily Show.”
Second was the presence of Unger, a former CBS veteran who had become disillusioned with TV journalism. He taught the staff the tricks of the trade: The furrowed brow, the serious listening face, the nodding, the pursing of the lips and the camera turns.
