It isn’t so much how to build better vehicles the public drives, but how are we going to regulate development and testing of the vehicles that will drive themselves
On Wednesday, we sat down with Edward Straub, the AVSC executive director who explained how the consortium plans to try to make some sense of the basically unstructured environment surrounding autonomous vehicle development and testing.
The AVSC is in the late stages of developing what it calls its “Roadmap.” Straub explained it will tackle what he termed “building blocks” of principles that could be followed regarding such aspects of AV development and testing such as safe operator training, refresher training, in-cab policies for supervising automated vehicles during testing and even how an AV might interact with first responders in the event of an accident or medical emergency.
Straub agrees, conditionally, with the National Safety Council’s Kelly Nantel about not creating regulations prematurely, saying “I think it’s a valid argument but I don’t think it’s too early to start talking about it. It’s really hard to come up with a standard while technology is still being invented.
