The woods are leaf-free spires of light, Cinderella’s sisters are outfitted in bad 80s prom dresses, and Rapunzel’s coil of blonde hair is a rope in the national touring production of. Directed by Lear deBessonet, Stephen Sondheim’s musical is one of endlessly intricate lyrics packaged in broad suggestions of time and place rather than literal interpretations of fairy-tale atmospherics.
It works, from the boom/splat of the giant’s scaffolding-like boots to the Ophelia-like madness of post-tower Rapunzel to the slightly manic philosophizing of Cinderella on the steps of the palace.Through 5/7: Tue 7:30 PM, Wed 2 and 7:30 PM, Thu-Fri 7:30 PM, Sat 2 and 8 PM, Sun 2 PM; James M. There’s peril in these woods: Giants drop from the sky as bakers, children, and even witches become trapped in vicious cycles of violence, unassisted by a “royal family” that’s about as helpful as thoughts and prayers against a loaded assault weapon. There’s also enchantment here, with outbursts of pure joy and plenty of comic relief throughout the production.
