Lucky Duck Foundation details support for the Unsafe Camping Ordinance. The San Diego City Council is set to vote on the proposal on Tuesday.
SAN DIEGO – More than 2,000 homeless people were counted living on the streets of downtown San Diego one night in May, a record high.
The monthly result was released the same day as the results of an unrelated annual Point-in-Time countywide count which found a 22% increase in the homeless population, totaling over 10,000 across San Diego County. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has been vocal about his support for the ordinance, as he has been the target of valid criticism from San Diegans on both sides of the political spectrum. Gloria himself is now publicly recognizing there is a major criminal element within the homeless population that is destroying communities and making it very unsafe for children and families to walk the streets of their neighborhood.
The Lucky Duck Foundation believes no one should live on the streets – it is not safe or humane for anyone. Although existing ordinances currently in place prevent against sidewalk habitation, we support the unsafe camping ordinance proposed by Councilmember Whitburn. We see this as a way to move the City towards adding more shelters and other readily available beds to reduce homelessness and help our neighbors in need.
