Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, right, shoots as Los Angeles Clippers guard Terance Mann, center, and forward Robert Covington defend during the first half of an NBA basketball game Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, in Los Angeles.were walking into trouble Tuesday night because of the mere fact that their opponents, the Los Angeles Clippers, were in the throes of a six-game winning streak.
“When we don’t score, it really affects our defense,” said coach Jason Kidd, whose team also got outrebounded 46-32. “You really saw that in the first half.”Stymied by Clippers double-teams, Doncic scored only 12 first-half points on 3-of-9 shooting -- but he erupted for 11 points in the third quarter and 20 more in the fourth.
In the second half, Doncic had a scary moment. While corralling a loose ball, he got fouled. His momentum carried him into and over the row of seats on the Crypto.com Arena sideline. The Mavericks have started this key five-game road trip with losses to Oklahoma City and the Clippers, with a Thursday date upcoming here against the Lakers, followed by back-to-back games in Portland. The Mavericks could get Josh Green back from a month’s absence as soon as Thursday, and Dorian Finney-Smith could return within the next week.
Even with Leonard playing sporadically and Paul George on Tuesday missing his 13th game, the Mavericks knew Los Angeles wasn’t as bad as its losing streak and 21-21 record indicated. Before Tuesday’s game, Kidd admitted that his team primarily was winning with offense, but he said he was starting to see other positive signs, including the scoring contribution of rookie Jaden Hardy.
