A 4.9 magnitude aftershock hit Southern California early Friday morning one week after two major earthquakes rattled the region., the quake hit at about 6:11 a.m. about five miles northeast of Ridgecrest.
The USGS also reported that a magnitude 3.1 aftershock followed about two minutes later in the same region. Over the Fourth of July weekend, twin 6.4- and 7.1-magnitude earthquakes rattled Southern California. Both tremors originated near Ridgecrest. The 7.1 quake was the largest in 20 years and could be felt as far north as Sacramento, east as Las Vegas and south as Mexico.
Authorities estimated the damage to Ridgecrest and the nearby mining town of Trona to be at about $100 million, according to the Associated Press. No major injuries were reported in the area, though the July 4 quake may be linked to a death in Nevada, where a 56-year-old man was found pinned under a Jeep about 150 miles from the quake's epicenter.
