A tropical depression that formed over the Caribbean Sea on Wednesday is expected to rapidly intensify over the Gulf of Mexico and could make landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast as a major hurricane early next week, representing by far the biggest threat to the U.S. yet this hurricane season.... [+]Tropical Depression Nine has 35 mph maximum sustained winds and is located about 115 miles south-southwest of Jamaica, but should move into the Gulf of Mexico by late Friday.

Landfall along the Gulf Coast is expected late on Sunday"at or near major hurricane intensity," with the Louisiana coastline most likely to take a direct hit.
