NEWARK — A Washington man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting Friday of another man in what authorities said was a revenge killing sparked by the death of the suspect’s daughter on a San Jose freeway in October.
Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said in a news release announcing the charges that Lopez blamed Cantu’s son for the death of his 16-year-old daughter. Authorities did not offer more details about why Lopez may have held this belief.after she was hit by at least five vehicles while walking on Interstate 680 in San Jose near Jackson .Avenue.
In her release, O’Malley said that the suspect said that Cantu’s son had killed his daughter before shooting Cantu twice. The son was not home at the time of the shooting.The shooting was captured on a camera affixed over the home’s garage, authorities said. After the violence, Lopez could be seen walking away toward his vehicle, which he had parked about a block away, before getting in and driving away.
Police said that investigators compared the surveillance video of the shooting with prior mugshots of Lopez and his Washington driver’s license image to identify him as the suspect and obtained a probable cause warrant for his arrest.
