Members of the Washington County “critical incident” task force are investigating the man’s death, but preliminary evidence shows Staples likely died by suicide, according to a news release.
| March 11, 2023, 1:00 p.m.Officials identified the man as David Staples, and said he died of cardiac arrest despite life-saving efforts at the Purgatory Correctional Facility.
Staples was facing two felony counts of possession by an inmate of prohibited items and a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license, court documents state. He was originally taken into custody on Feb. 28, when an officer found Staples driving with five active warrants.
The measure’s sponsors, Rep. Carol Spackman Moss and Sen. Todd Weiler, both acknowledged in hearings throughout this year’s legislative session that suicide barriers won’t eradicate jail deaths, but they hope this program will help.
