A man was arrested on a capital murder charge in the slaying of a woman Tuesday evening near Oak Lawn.and was booked into the Dallas County jail Wednesday. His attorney declined to comment.
Just before 9 p.m. Tuesday, a witness flagged down Dallas police officers in the 2600 block of Arroyo Avenue, near Maple and Wycliff avenues, and told them he saw a shooting at an apartment complex parking lot, an arrest-warrant affidavit says. In a later interview, the witness said the gunman — who was wearing a white or tan hoodie — fired several shots downward while standing near a white car, then get in the vehicle and drive away.
While they were talking, the witness and officers saw a white sedan leave the complex with its headlights off, and the witness told the officers it was involved in the shooting. While the officers stopped the car and detained its driver, the witness walked back to where he saw the shooting and found a woman dead near a staircase in the parking lot, according to the affidavit.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and pronounced the woman, identified as Garcia, dead a short time later. Police determined that the car in the traffic stop was registered to her, the affidavit says.
