A Michigan man who admitted taking part in an extremist group's plot to kidnap Gov. Whitmer in retaliation for Covid restrictions was sentenced to over 6 years in prison.
Informed of the plot a year ago, Whitmer said,"I knew the job would be hard. I'll be honest, I never could have imagined anything like this."
The men conducted surveillance of the governor's summer house in both the daytime and at night and discussed planting explosives under a bridge to slow down police who would respond to trouble, court documents said. Federal agents and state police arrested the plotters last October, moving in when the FBI became concerned that an undercover source who infiltrated the group was about to be discovered. Garbin's cooperation, prosecutors said,"filled in the gaps in the government's knowledge" by recounting conversations and actions that did not include the informant.
Federal sentencing guidelines called for term of up to 17½ years in prison. Lawyers for both Garbin and the government urged the judge to take his extensive cooperation into account. Prosecutors recommended a sentence of nine years. His lawyers called for one"well below the guidelines."
