Sen. Manchin is staying in the US Senate, deciding against running for governor in West Virginia, spokesperson tells NBCNews.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., won't seek another run at his state's governorship next year, he announced Tuesday.
Manchin, who previously served as governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010, won re-election to the Senate last fall in a more than 3-point victory over state Attorney General Patrick Morrissey. Manchin was considering a gubernatorial bid against Republican Gov. Jim Justice.
"I have always said that 'public service is not self-service,'" Manchin said in his Tuesday statement."So, when considering whether to run for Governor, I couldn’t focus just on which job I enjoyed the most, but on where I could be the most effective for the Mountain State."
