Think twice before buying that cup of soda.
Researchers at Loma Linda University in Southern California decided to test some of those drink dispensers, along with other water systems in their region. They found many were absolutely filthy — and some contained bacteria that can make you very sick.in California’s Eastern Coachella Valley contained coliform, bacteria found in the digestive tracts of humans and animals. The type of coliforms included “superbugs” like salmonella, listeria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Campylobacter jejuni and E.
The water vending machines tested in the study were “generally located in low-income and immigrant communities,” the study noted. The study said “waterborne microbial agents, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio cholerae, Legionella, E. coli O157:H7, and Pseudomonas have been implicated in acute gastrointestinal illnesses, acute respiratory illnesses, hepatitis, and several deaths.”
The Loma Linda study said filtration systems for water vending machines and soda fountains seem “to be insufficient to prevent consumers from drinking contaminated water.”
